NSF REU

2007/2008 Undergraduate Research Experience

In Engineering Design

Working with Dr. Janis Terpenny and Her Graduate Students

in 3050 Torgersen Hall

[First Preference Given to Majors in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Aerospace and Ocean Engineering and Computer Science]

The purpose of this program is to: 1) introduce students to current methods and techniques in collaborative engineering design; 2) introduce and expose them to research in the use of knowledge management in engineering design; and 3) have them investigate and develop computer-based design knowledge representation, data integration and decision support systems for product design.

The students will facilitate the development of ontology-based tools for data integration and decision making. The data will be retrieved from a variety of distributed data resources based on the information saved in the ontology, and the ontology-based decision support tool can utilize the integrated information to give designers suggestions.

Through this project, the students can learn about the ontology and semantic web that are important in knowledge management, and grasp the basic methods of decision making in engineering design. They will gain first hand knowledge in computer supported cooperative work, and become familiar with the Browser/Server mode working mechanism. They will also gain abundant experience in the development of ASP web pages, multiple databases, and an ontology-based reasoner.  Students may also help with the development of industry case problem examples.
