Welcome to the SMART Laboratory Website!

Research of the SMART Lab is at the intersection of engineering design and information technology. A systems oriented approach is applied to provide designers, particularly of complex systems and products, with methods and tools that allow for ease of modeling coupled with rigorous methods for design synthesis and evaluation from a life-cycle perspective. Knowledge management, function-based design representation, and solution synthesis methods that consider preference, imprecise information and multi-attribute decision-making are integral to current projects. The SMART Lab is actively invested in research related to the use of the Internet for collaborative and distributed design and also its use as a tool to improve the availability, quality, and cost of engineering education. The SMART Lab places a high value on the continued interest and participation of industry partners in research and education activities.
