Department of Engineering Education

Non-Engineering Students

There are always students at Virginia Tech who are not engineering majors who would like to study engineering, and we have tried to set up a process that makes it possible for those students to be able to take the required courses so that if they find that engineering is the right major for them they are able to make the switch.

Before a student can transfer from a major in another college (including University Studies) at Virginia Tech into General Engineering, he or she must have first completed EngE 1024, Engineering Exploration (formerly EF 2984, or EF 1015). This requirement may be completed either by transfer credit or by taking EngE 1024 at Virginia Tech.

In order to be eligible to take EngE 1024, Engineering Exploration, non-Engineering students must be Math Ready, as defined by the Virginia Tech Mathematics Department. Students are required to own a tablet computer and have proof of valid license for the software contained in the current Engineering Software Bundle.

ENGE prerequisite courses

are required for transfer into

the College of Engineering

To enroll in EngE 1024 during Fall or Spring semesters, the student will need to put his or her name on an electronic waiting list. The electronic waiting list is available from the EngE homepage when names are being accepted, typically during Course Request and the add-drop period. Students will be notified by e-mail once they are enrolled, although students are advised to keep checking their schedules on Hokie Spa.

The best opportunities for the non-engineering student to take EngE 1024 are in the spring semester and the first summer session. During spring semesters, seats in EngE 1024 are allocated based on GPA, without regard to major, until all seats are filled. In first summer session, there are no major restrictions on EngE 1024. A minimum grade of C- is required in EngE 1024(and also EngE 1104 or EngE 1114, the second course in the sequence).

Once the student has completed EngE 1024, Engineering Exploration, either by transfer credit or grade of C- or better at Virginia Tech, they will be able to enroll in EngE 1104, Exploration of the Digital Future for Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering. EngE 1114, Exploration of Engineering Design. Non-engineering students will need to put their name on the electronic waiting list available exclusively on the ENGE website.

After satisfying the course requirements, the non-engineering student must complete the Change of Major Request Form and submit it to the office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the College of Engineering, located in 212 Hancock Hall, for admission into the College of Engineering.
