Change of Major
All students wishing to pursue an engineering degree are initially admitted to General Engineering. However, students cannot obtain a degree in General Engineering. While in General Engineering students will complete the requirements to enter a degree granting engineering major. Students can choose from 14 degree granting engineering majors offered by the College of Engineering. Students wishing to change into or add a College of Engineering major should review the information below.

College of Engineering Change of Major Procedures
- Complete the Change of Major Requirements
- Submit the Change of Major Application
- General Engineering
- Degree Granting Engineering Major (e.g., GE to MINE and/or CHE to MSE)
- Engineering as a Secondary Major
- Applications are only available during the below specified application dates.
Note: All required coursework must be completed (not enrolled) and displayed with a final grade on Hokie Spa at the time of application. If students are using transfer credit to meet any of the course requirements, the credit must be posted on their VT Unofficial Transcript at the time of application.
Application to change into General Engineering
Students wishing to declare General Engineering should complete the College of Engineering Change of Major Application. Students must have completed the following coursework:
- ENGE 1024: Engineering Exploration (must earn a C- or better)
- CHEM 1035: General Chemistry
- CHEM 1045: General Chemistry Lab
- ENGL 1105: Freshman English
- MATH 1114: Elementary Linear Algebra
- MATH 1205: Calculus
- Overall GPA of a 2.0
Application to change into a degree granting engineering major
Students wishing to change from General Engineering into a degree granting engineering major or from one degree granting engineering major to another must complete the College of Engineering Change of Major Application.
Application to add an engineering major as a secondary major
Students wishing to add an engineering major should complete the College of Engineering Secondary Major Application. Students must have been in a primary degree granting major for a minimum of one semester to be eligible to declare a secondary degree granting engineering major.
Application Dates
Applications for changing into the College of Engineering or within the College of Engineering will only be accepted during these specified time intervals:
End of Spring Semester
Opens: Monday after final grades are posted at 8:00 a.m.
Closes: June 1 at 12:00 p.m. (noon)
Civil Engineering applications due May 17 at 12:00 p.m. (noon)
Summer
Opens: August 1at 8:00 a.m.
Closes: 3rd day of fall classes at 12:00 p.m. (noon)
End of Fall Semester
Opens: Monday after final grades are posted at 8:00 a.m.
Closes: 3rd day of spring classes at 12:00 p.m. (noon)
Civil Engineering applications due January 11 at 12:00 p.m. (noon)
